Lexington, KY – Mar. 17, 2017 – The CP National Horse Show is excited to announce that Geoff Teall has recently been appointed as the Chair of the Maclay Equitation Committee for 2017. Teall, who is a lifelong horseman and a respected judge, rider and trainer, will bring his life time of valuable expertise to the position and help to continue to move the organization forward to a future of successful high level competition.

“We are pleased to have Geoff Teall come on as the Chairman of the Equitation Committee,” said Mason Phelps, President of the National Horse Show. “He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and is very engaged in the process and rules of the equitation committee. He has been instrumental behind the scenes at the National Horse Show and now we are happy to have him move into a leadership position.”

As the head trainer and owner of Montoga, Inc. Teall has been involved in the horse industry for over 40 years, training champions at prestigious American horse shows including Lake Placid, The Hampton Classic, Winter Equestrian Festival, Capital Challenge, Devon, and the National Horse Show.

“I am honored to have been asked to chair the Equitation Committee because I believe that it is an important committee and important class at the National Horse Show,” remarked Teall.

Teall holds his “R” Hunter and Hunter Equitation license and has judged at all of the top hunter shows. In the equitation division he has judged the USEF Pessoa Medal Finals, many ASPCA Regional Finals, WIHS Equitation Finals, USEF Pony Medal Finals and the New England Medal Finals.

More recently in his long and varied career, Teall has been heavily involved in the governance of hunter and equitation competition. He served as National Vice President of the USHJA as well as holding seats on USHJA and UHSJA Foundation Board of Directors and the USHJA Executive Committee. In addition he served as Chairman of the USEF National Hunter Committee and the USHJA Joint Equitation Task Force. He also sits on the USEF Drugs and Medications Committee and the Horse Welfare Initiative Task Force.

“My goals for the committee this year are two fold,” said Teall. “We are in the process of re-writing the Maclay specifications with a fresh set of eyes, which is a huge project. We would also like to continue the initiative, started by Susie Humes, to organize the Regional Finals and make them as uniform as possible and level the playing field for the participants.

Every year, the CP National Horse Show plays host to the ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay National Championships, which showcases the top junior riders, many of whom have aspirations of representing the U.S. in international competition.

“Because of my age and history in equestrian sport, I want to continue to advocate for the equitation division and it’s mission to teach children how to ride correctly,” explained Teall. “Equitation was founded as an exercise and learning experience for children to go off of and I want to remain involved because there are so few professionals left who are old enough to remember the founding concept.”
